ICLEI World Congress Partners Event

What ever happened to the soccer balls?

For those ICLEI members who attended the World Congress from the 27 February – 3 March, you will remember that all cities were encouraged to bring a soccer ball as a gift to the host city, Cape Town. A total of 124 balls were received and these were handed over to the Nelson Mandela Peace Park, Cape Town at an official ceremony which took place at the end of August 2006. The Nelson Mandela Peace Park is located on the Cape Flats, one of Cape Town’s poorest areas. The Peace Park strives to promote community upliftment in an area where few developmental opportunities previously existed.

The function allowed the opportunity for the City of Cape Town as host of the World Congress to thank the various sponsors and partners of the Congress which included the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism; Department of Provincial and Local Government; Department of Science and Technology; City of Johannesburg; Western Cape Provincial Government and Metrorail. All partners received an ICLEI World Congress soccer book which comprised stories from the various cities that donated balls, as well as photographs form the World Congress. However, partners were only able to receive their book, once they had scored a goal – in the goal posts which ICLEI donated to the City of Cape Town. The best goal of the day was scored by the Executive Mayor of Cape Town, Helen Zille who officially handed over the soccer balls to the Peace Park.
