The symposium, brought together international researchers of sustainable communities and cities from a variety of disciplines to discuss research programmes, projects and results and to identify research opportunities and new strategies, in conjunction with local government practitioners.

The Researchers Symposium on Sustainable Human Settlements and their Governance is an initiative of ICLEI-Local Governments for Sustainability, the City of Cape Town, the Centre for Environmental Management (North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, South Africa), the Centre for Sustainable Community Development (Simon Fraser University, Canada), and the Department of Enviromental and Geographical Science (University of Cape Town, South Africa).
An Academic Advisory Committee, comprising academics from UCT, the University of Witwatersrand, North-West University (Potchefstroom Campus), University of Stellenbosch, as well as Simon Fraser University (Canada) will provide guidance and scholarly input to the planning of this event. This committee will also be responsible for planning the conference programme and ensuring that the outcomes from the Symposium are presented at the ICLEI World Congress (27 February - 3 March 2006).
