The ICLEI Climate Legacy is an initiative that attempts to reduce the environmental impacts of ICLEI events and is directly linked to the implementation of the “Athens Call for Greening Events”.
A carbon offset payment is included in the congress fee, to compensate for the CO2 emissions caused as a result of congress related air travel. This offset payment is calculated according to participants' average distance travelled by region using www.atmosfair.info
The funding generated through the ICLEI Climate Legacy initiative will finance a Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) reduction project in Cape Town. This project, which will fit residential units in a low-income settlement with solar water heaters, insulated ceilings and energy efficient lighting, will be an important adjunct to the City of Cape Town's pressing integrated human settlement requirements and will help set the direction for sustainable housing construction in the long term. The City is indebted to ICLEI in having made these funds available in order to pioneer such important work.
